Stickers And Stamps: March 2021

Back in August of 2020, it occurred to me that I could do something small and positive, even though I felt powerless. Maybe I could send the art stickers I was planning to give away at big events to folks through the mail? That way, I could also support the USPS.

I knew that what I spent on stamps would be just a drop in the bucket, but every stamp felt empowering — a tiny protest. Sending letters had never felt so political before.

To be clear, I wasn’t sending political letters. Far from it. I was just sending stickers and postcards with my generative art printed on them. But the simple act of mailing a letter was itself political. So depressingly bizarre.

Generative art, by San Francisco artist Kristin Henry, printed on stickers.

It’s seven months later and it feels like spring, in so many ways. Since this started, I’ve mailed over 400 envelopes across the US and around the world. As long as people keep signing up, I’ll keep mailing.

What’s coming up next for the project?

  • Continue spreading word about the project and invite more people to participate in the project.
  • Updating and expanding the maps and charts of the data collected on how long my letters have taken to arrive at their destinations.
  • Including reply envelopes with my new P.O. box address on them, so that I can more reliably track how long it takes letters to get back to me.
  • Inviting guest artists to participate in the project. If you’re an artist, and would like to participate, please get in touch or sign up for the project and mention your interest in the comments field.
  • And more…
